/introduction

Hello, and welcome to my Artemis Fowl fan page. Now I can't think of what else to say. But what is there else to say? There's just Artemis, plain and simple, although he's anything but. I assume that you are all familiar with the character. For those who aren't, he is the brilliant creation of Irish author Eoin (pronounced Owen) Colfer. Artemis Fowl is an Irish youth and criminal mastermind, a gaunt, pale, and rather scary boy as seen above. He stars in all three of Colfer's Artemis Fowl books, which I will say more about later. But what would a star be without his co-stars? This where the fairy People come in. They are a technilogically advanced society that lives underground, far from your Tinkerbell breed of fairy. The People includes all fairies, elves, goblins, trolls, leprechauns and similar bumps on the log. Whether Artemis is stealing from them, for them or with them, they're always there! And now onto the page. Happy discovering!

(If some of the pictures come up as those annoying little boxes with red x's in them, that's ok, there's nothing wrong. I've had it happen a couple of times to me and nothing is actually wrong with the pictures. Just refresh the page and they'll come back.)

artemis/books

Book 1

The book begins in the end of one adventure. Butler and Artemis have been globetrotting to find The Book. The Book is like the bible of the People. Artemis photographs every page of a sprite's Book who he finds in Ho Chi Minh City. Then the real task begins--Artemis must decode The Book. Now, what is his motive? Gold. Fairy gold. He believes that The Book will help him get a fairy and relieve it of its gold. Now, this isn't that pot-of-gold-at-the-end-of-a-rainbow Lucky Charms nonsense. What Artemis is after is the ransom fund. So, with the help of The Book, Butler and Artemis abduct a fairy and and hold her hostage. But this isn't any fairy. This is LEP Captain Holly Short. And if Artemis ever had one thought that getting gold out of this bunch of fairies was going to be easy, he was dead wrong.

Book 2

Artemis's scheme is a little more heartfelt this time. For years Artemis's father has been missing, his ship blown up near northern Russia. His motive is to find him--if he's alive. Of course, the People must be involved somehow. A goblin gang called the B'wa Kell has been smuggling batteries down to the Lower Elements to power illegal softnose lasers. Of course, it's not as simple as apprehending the B'wa Kell. Goblins...well, let's put it this way. How many goblins does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Four. One to screw it in, two to give him step-by-step instructions, and another one to shoot them all, steal the lightbulb and sell it on the black market. So they figure some mastermind must be behind it, and all of Holly Short's instincts point to Artemis Fowl. When it has been confirmed that Artemis isn't behind it, they set up a kind of deal. Artemis and his gang (well, Butler) will help the LEP to find out who's behind the battery heist and Holly and her gang will help Artemis find his father. Who turns out to be behind this scheme? None other than Opal Koboi, a power-crazed pixie girl bent on world domination and her man on the inside of the LEP, Briar Cudgeon.

Book 3

Artemis has invented an amazing new piece of technology. Amazing to humans, that is. The marvel (named The C Cube) is actually just cobbled together from LEP technology. Artemis sets up a meeting with Chicago business man Jo Spiro, head honcho of Fission Chips Communications. Artemis's aim is not to sell it. He is giving Spiro a chance to get rid of his stocks and company, because The C Cube will render all current technology obsolete--for a price. Being the aggressive man Spiro is, he won't take "No sale" for an answer. It turns out the meeting is all an ambush. Spiro steals The C Cube and leaves Artemis and Butler to deal with the restaurant full of gun wielders. Artemis escapes from the whole bloody mess unscathed, but Butler is mortally wounded. Once again, the People will have to lend a hand...

Book 4

As you SHOULD know by now, at the end of the last book, Artemis had his mind wiped of anything resembling a memory involving the fairies. But not without backup. He fashioned a computer disk with a memory trigger on it into a gold medallion, which he entrusted to Mulch of all people. But for the first few chapters, he's back to his criminal ways, stealing a famous painting. In the meantime, Opal Koboi has been placed in mental institute of sorts. She is thought to be in a coma, but is secretly lying in wait for the proper moment to strike. And how does she strike? By escaping the institute, replacing herself with a clone barely capable of vital functions. So, a pixie psychopath is on the loose and all the useful fairy memories are tucked away safely in a dark corner of Artemis' enormous brain. This can only mean trouble.

artemis/characters

You've already met Artemis, but what about the rest of the crew? Preeeeeesenting...

Domovoi Butler

Butler is Artemis's ever-present companion and bodyguard. In the first book there is quite a bit of history about the Butlers, the only important part being that the Butlers have served the Fowls as bodyguards for centuries. If there is no Fowl to guard when a Butler is finished their training, they serve royalty and various other personnages. I don't want to ramble on and on about Butler's past, though. He is very well trained in ammo, cooking and defence. His only weakness appears to be his little sister.

Juliet Butler

Juliet is Butler's little sister. She may look like a floozie from the picture, but trust me, if you called her anything like that she'd have you in a full nelson in a nanosecond. She is adored by many locals. Male locals. She has not completed her ultimate training, but still serves as a kind of bodyguard-ish thingy for Madame Fowl. Her favourite pastimes are wrestling, watching wrestling, and trying to understand Artemis.

Holly Short

Ah! Finally, one of the People. I've never been very good at depicting Holly. Anyway, Holly is an elf. She is also a Captain in the LEPrecon. That's short for Lower Elements Police Reconnaisance (hope I spelled that right, I've always had trouble with that word). She is the only female in the LEP, other than the small occupation Lila Frond has. Holly is constantly getting into messes and disobeying orders, but is nevertheless one of the best people the LEP's got. In the first book she was held hostage by Artemis.

Julius Root

Root is Commander of the LEP. He is good friends with Holly, though is constantly roaring at her for her insubordination. He has a quick temper. So quick there's an office pool running for how long it will be before his heart explodes. He's often seen with a tomatoe red complexion and a fungus cigar mashed between his teeth.

Foaly ???

I've just realized I've no idea what Foaly's last name is. Do centaurs have last names? Oops, I just gave it away. Foaly is a centaur. That's why his torso is naked. Secondly, what's up with the hat? It's made out of tin foil and Foaly, being the eccentric computer genius that he is, believes human satellites are trying to read his mind to gain technology secrets. Foaly is the brains of the operation. He commandeers all of the LEP's technology down to the last optic fibre. He's quite handy when dismantling security systems, as often needs to be done.

Mulch Diggums

Mr. Diggums has somehow managed to wedge his way into all four books, each time with a smile, a laugh, or a whispered, "He's back!" Mulch is a kleptomaniac dwarf, even shorter than the normal fairy (which would be, by the way, about 3'5"). For those of you with a smaller vocabulary, a kleptomaniac is someone who cannot help but steal. Mulch is quite good at fitting the bill. He's a dwarf, which means he has several advantages on his side when flaunting the law: he can tunnel underground by chewing straight through dirt and rock, make a lockpick out of his beard hair and, er...launch projectiles...out of the south end, if you know what I mean. From chewed clay. Mulch usually appeals to male readers under eleven. Anyway, Mulch has made several appearances as himself, a reclusive penthouse owner and a monkey for the mob. Artemis or the People always end up needing to use him somehow.

Perhaps if I have time, I'll do lesser characters like Angeline Fowl, Opal Koboi and Jon Spiro.

artemis/news

As most of you probably know, there is an Artemis Fowl movie coming out soon. It will be produced by Miramax/Tribeca. It is rumoured that Nicholas Hoult (most famous for his performance as Marcus in About a Boy) may be Colfer's choice for Artemis.

Colfer is currently working on a musical.

I went to a reading and signing on Nov 13, 2003, and Colfer said during a question period that he did not yet have a name for the fourth book but there will definitely be one. Someone asked if Artemis would prefer blonds or brunettes and he decided that he would look at their personality instead of their looks.

OH MY GOD!!! I'm going to have to make a shrine for my battered yet signed copy of "Artemis Fowl". I told him he was my favourite authour and that I wanted to be a writer. He gave me some advice, so fellow writers, listen up! If you are working on several books, try to encorporate them all so they will be better, as in take they very best from this one and the very best from that one. You can never be too young to get published. He said that the publishers really only look at the first fifty pages, so you don't actually have to write a whole book, just 50 pages that you have worked really hard on.

The goblins who die in "The Arctic Incident" are all based on his brothers. Holly is based on a dertermined and extremely talkative past student.

Not neccesarily Artemis Fowl news, but I've known many Arty fans to love other Colfer works. Many of you may know/own a copy of the recently released in North America "The Wish List". But I now own my hard cover copy of "The Supernaturalist", another book by Colfer. Same angry young man character (only with superpowers!!) so if you dig that kind of thing high-tail it to the nearest bookstore.

It's rumoured that Holly may be played by Cameron Diaz.

If I hear any more news, I'll shout!

artemis/author

As I've said repeatedly, the author of the Artemis Fowl books is Eoin Colfer. He grew up in Wexford, Ireland. He was married to his wife named Jackie in 1991 (whom he met at a girls' school for Irish dancing) and after travelling they settled down in Wexford. He has two children, Finn and Sean. Eoin is one of five brothers. Colfer went to school in Dublin. When he had finished school, he began work as a primary teacher. His first hit, Benny and Omar, was published in 1998 and translated into Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. The sequel, Benny and Babe, was published in 1999. Another book of his, The Wish List, was published in 2000 and won a Bisto Merit Award the following year. The reason for writing Artemis Fowl was that he wanted to write a fantasy that would appeal to a wider audience and his love of Irish legends. The book was published in 2001. He gave up teaching following this success. For more info about Colfer, visit his website.
